Standpunt

For Flemish speakers, the term standpunt carries a broad range of meanings. While its literal translation is standing point, it encompasses much more: having an opinion, the way one thinks about something, the position from which one observes or evaluates, and so on. The word stand alone also refers to a defined spot, such as a market stall, or the act of bringing something into existence, as in “to bring something to stand.”

This conceptual accommodation is designed to encourage travelers to reflect by interacting with others and, through dialogue, perhaps reconsider certain opinions.

The design of Standpunt is a personal interpretation of the Grote Markt layout. The structure consists of various zones. The main entrance offers a space where one can safely observe the surroundings. Additionally, there is a zone dedicated to complete solitude, a space for overnight stays. The care area features a long, eye-level opening on one side, compelling users to connect with the environment at a moment when it is entirely unexpected. The rear section is a part returned to the public space, providing a resting and sheltering spot for passersby. Perhaps a brief conversation at the back?
